Thailand may inspect flagged bags without the passenger

Since 16 October, security staff at Thai airports may open a flagged checked bag without its owner present. The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand says the rule applies only when screening detects a suspicious, dangerous or prohibited item and does not permit routine opening of bags, according to The Nation Thailand. The inspection takes place in a designated area and is recorded, a notice is left inside the bag, and prohibited items may be seized.

The authority advises using internationally recognised locks, such as TSA-approved ones, which authorised staff can open with special equipment, and travellers who believe a bag was damaged can complain through their airline or the authority.
